Can reference points explain wage rigidity? Experimental evidence

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract I examine whether reference points can provide an explanation for rigid wages in recessions. Even though a recession provides good reason to adjust downward, workers’ perception of “fair wage” may depend on their previous wage, point. Using laboratory experiment, test this idea by varying initially concluded contracts—and stipulated wages—can serve as points. My experimental results show that with initial contracts workers punish wage cuts even recessions, leading considerable more wages. Surprisingly, is true without “objective” justification feel entitled contracts.

Contracts as Reference Points: Experimental Evidence

Contracts as Reference Points: Experimental Evidence In a recent paper, Hart and Moore (2008) introduce new behavioral assumptions that can explain long term contracts and important aspects of the employment relation. However, so far there exists no direct evidence that supports these assumptions and, in particular, Hart and Moore’s notion that contracts provide reference points. In this paper,...

Contracts as Reference Points — Experimental

493 In a recent paper Hart and Moore (2008) develop a theory which provides a basis for long-term contracts in the absence of noncontractible investments. The theory is also capable of rationalizing the employment contract, which fixes wages in advance and leaves discretion to the employer. However, the theory rests on strong behavioral assumptions that lack direct empirical support and deviate...

Can the Stolper-Samuelson Theorem explain relative wage movements? Evidence from Mexico

Rising wage inequality and increasing international trade have renewed interest in the empirical relevance of the Stolper-Samuelson theorem. Although a brilliant theoretical accomplishment, the Stolper-Samuelson theorem has received little empirical support. U.S. studies have generated mixed results partially because prices are endogenous in a large country. This paper examines the link between...

Can Rescheduling Explain the New Jersey Minimum Wage Studies?

In a recent and storied paper, David Card and Alan Krueger (1994) claim to find evidence that the 1992 New Jersey minimum wage hike raised the level of employment in fast food restaurants in that state (although not significantly by conventional statistical standards). In a response widely-cited in the press, David Neumark and William Wascher (1995), using data on payroll hours, claim to show t...

Can Prospect Theory Explain the Disposition Effect? A New Perspective on Reference Points∗

There is a recent debate on whether prospect theory can explain the disposition effect. Using both theory and simulation, this paper shows that prospect theory often predicts the disposition effect when lagged expected final wealth is the reference point under the principle of preferred personal equilibrium, regardless of whether the reference point is updated or not. When initial wealth is the...
